Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the categories and functions of expressive speech acts of condolences in the comment column on @cnn Instagram account posts about the earthquake that occurred in Afghanistan. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study are all utterances in netizen comments that contain expressive speech acts of condolence. The data are classified from the category of expressive speech acts of condolence according to Smith's theory (2003). Then, the function of expressive speech acts of condolence using Kuang's theory (2015). The findings of the study show that there are three categories of expressive speech acts of condolence, namely: classical stock condolence phrases found in 23 data, condolence phrases considering someone's religious beliefs found in 16 data and condolence phrases as quotes found in 1 data. There are six functions of expressive speech acts of condolence that appear in the comment column of @cnn Instagram account, namely expressing concern via directives found in 3 data, expressing sympathy found in 16 data, expressing wishful thinking found in 12 data, explanation before expressing sympathy found in 2 data, expressing sympathy and eulogy at the same time found in 3 data, and expressing uncertainty found in 4 data. The findings also show that classical stock condolence is the category of expressive speech acts of condolence that is most dominantly used. And the function of expressive speech acts of condolence that is most dominantly used is expressing sympathy.
