Abstract
This research aims to identify the type of word formation process also to describe the process through unravelling complex words’ morphological structure found in Reuters' Instagram captions precisely in the context of the Israel-Hamas conflict from October 7 to November 24, 2023, by using Plag's (2018) theory of word-formation process. Knowing how words are formed, especially in social media, is rarely considered important. This makes research on the word formation process necessary. Given that the object of this research is the word formation process, this research falls under morphology. By using a qualitative descriptive method, data was collected using documentation techniques. The findings reveal that there are five out of seven types of word formation processes found including 90 data derivations, 27 data compounding, 7 data abbreviations, 2 data back-formations and 1 datum conversion. Meanwhile, blending and clipping were not found. In addition, this research also shows that a complex word that undergoes element addition is more likely to have its morphological structure described than a complex word formed from element deletion. The results of this research provide valuable insights for academics in optimizing the use of social media to support learning about the word formation process. Suggestions for further research are also discussed.
