Abstract

Grammatical cohesion can be found in various types of text, including social media text. One of them be found in YouTube videos. YouTube channel named Curiosity Stream has many interview videos that do not exceed an hour of duration. In YouTube, videos are usually having a duration limit that prevent making the video too long to watch. Understanding how grammatical cohesion operates in these videos can provide insights into their effectiveness in terms of shortening a sentence and its clarity. This research aims to identify the grammatical cohesion that present in an interview with a YouTuber named MrBeast and his crew in a video entitled “The Origin and Rise of Mrbeast” and to understand the function of cohesive devices that are reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction in the interview through SFL analysis based on Halliday and Hasan’s theory. This is qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The data source for this study includes primary data obtained through documentation techniques. The results of the study indicate that all kinds of grammatical cohesion can be found in the interview video, with a total of forty-four data, twenty-five references, five substitutions, four ellipsis, and ten conjunctions. Additionally, this research found the function of the forty-four data. Based on the analysis from the data found, grammatical cohesion has a great role in this interview because it helps shorten the length of the interview and makes the interview flow smoothly. This study is expected to provide motivation, insight, and references for readers and future researchers who wish to explore similar topics, specifically grammatical cohesion.
