Abstract

This research aims to discover the roles of the main characters portrayed in the movie and how the hard-boiled formula applies in the movie Knives Out (2019). This research used John G. Cawelti's theory of main characters in the hard-boiled detective formula: the detective, the victim, the criminal, and those involved in the crime. The action pattern of the hard-boiled detective formula was the detective as a hero, suspense and threat, a modern city as a background, the role of women, and changing meaning. This research design applies M.Abram’s literary criticism methodology, precisely the objective approach, and a qualitative descriptive study methodology. This research also used methodologies that rely on script and picture data, have distinct processes in data processing, and draw on various designs. This method was utilized to assess the data from a visual and narrative perspective because those elements can be portrayed in either way. The result of the research is that among the roles of the main characters mentioned, all portrayed fit the theory of Cawelti; the writer found a detective, two victims, seven criminals, and two of those involved in the crime. The Hard-boiled Detective Formula in the movie is built on the Action Pattern. Furthermore, the writer found four that consist of a detective as a hero, one in suspense and threat, two of a modern city as background, four in the role of women, and the last five in changing meaning. The writer concludes that the movie Knives Out (2019) fulfills and applies all patterns of action in a hard-boiled detective formula from Cawelti’s theory.
