Abstract
This research aims to explain the types of expressive speech acts in the comments column of Al-Jazeera English YouTube Channel entitled “Is Israel’s Attack on Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital a War Crime? | Inside Story”. This research uses a qualitative method with descriptive approach that analyzes expressive speech acts in the comments column. The theories used are Searle & Vanderveken (1985) regarding expressive speech acts and Wijana (1996) regarding speech strategies. The type of data used is the video comments. Based on the results of the research, there are eight types of expressive speech acts found. In this study, there were a total of 72 data types of expressive speech acts found with the most dominant type being protesting as many as 32 data. This is because many users disagree with the video claimed by the IDF as evidence of Hamas in the al-Shifa hospital. Then, there are four speech strategies found, including direct literal speech strategies, indirect literal speech strategies, indirect literal speech strategies, and indirect non-literal speech strategies with the most dominant speech strategy being the direct literal speech strategy, which is 40 data. This is because users use simple words that can emphasize the intent of their speech.
