Abstract
This study examines paraphrasing strategies and challenges faced by English as Foreign Language (EFL) students in writing research proposals, comparing manual and digital methods. Conducted at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung with participants from the English Education Department, the research used a descriptive comparative approach and qualitative design. Data were collected via questionnaires and interviews from 10 participants (5 using manual methods and 5 using digital tools). Findings revealed significant challenges in both methods: manual paraphrasing faced issues with understanding complex texts and maintaining clarity, while digital paraphrasing struggled with tool accuracy and plagiarism avoidance. The study found that combining manual and digital techniques yielded more effective results, enhancing efficiency, clarity, and originality in academic writing. The research highlights the benefits of integrating both methods to improve writing quality in higher education.
