Abstract

This study aims to analyze the interruption and overlapping conversations contained in the interview conversation between Piers Morgan and Bassem Youssef. The objectives of this study are: 1) to identify the types of interruptions and overlaps that occur between Piers Morgan and Bassem Youssef. 2) to analyze the reasons for the interruptions and overlaps that occur in the interview conversation between Piers Morgan and Bassem Youssef. To get answers to the research problems, this study uses the theory of Zimmerman & West (1975) and is supported by Murata (1994) which discusses interruptions. Jefferson's theory (1983) which discusses overlap. The reasons for the occurrence of turn taking irregularities use Wardhaugh's theory (1985) which explains the reasons for the occurrence of interruptions and Guy Cook's theory (1989) which explains the reasons for the occurrence of overlaps. This study uses a qualitative method. The results of the study showed that in the interview conversation 47 data were categorized as interruptions and 19 data were categorized as overlaps. Of the 66 data, Adding a Further Comment is the most common reason for interruption and Showing Agreement is the most common reason for Overlap.
