Abstract
A Haunting in Venice is a detective movie by Kenneth Branagh that is an adaptation of a novel entitled Hallowe'en Party by Agatha Christie. This movie uses red herring in its storytelling technique which is very important in classical detective formulas to make the storyline more complex and can make it difficult for the audience to guess the plot. This research aims to analyze the use of red herring in A Haunting in Venice movie to answer these two research questions: 1) How does red herring support classical detective formula in A Haunting in Venice movie? 2) How does red herring affect character development in A Haunting in Venice movie? This study uses Cawelti's theory of classical detective formula and Petrie & Boggs' theory of Character & Characterization, with literary criticism method and objective approach. The findings show that red herring is able to create complexity in the movie's storyline which is characterized by an investigation, made suspicious of other characters, and directed towards the supernatural. The use of red herring is also can make the nature of the main characters change, accuse each other, and believe more in myths. The complexity in A Haunting in Venice movie is directed to irrelevant things so that the main characters can be made lost. This study suggests the use of red herring analysis in detective genre films can use Cawelti's formula theory which is formed based on four aspects namely: situation, pattern of action, relationship between characters and setting.
