Abstract

This study examined the sentences posted on the Instagram official account of United Nations Human Rights which have messages about the rights of migrants, immigrants, and refuges. The United Nations want to reshape the point of view of migrants, immigrants, and refuges through several short stories and campaigns. Hence, the research objectives of this research are: 1) to identify the thematic roles are found on Instagram posts of United Nations Human Rights and 2) to analyze the thematic roles can enhance the meaning for the readers on Instagram posts of United Nations Human Rights. This study applied the theory by Charles W. Kreidler (1998). The research method is used in this study is the qualitative method. The source of the data for this study come from the Instagram official account of United Nations Human Rights. The study focuses on sentences on the United Nations Human Rights Instagram posts from December 18, 2020 until April 1, 2022 as the main data. Furthermore, the several screenshots of the Instagram posts are analyzed in order to identify each argument in the sentences in order to classify the thematic roles and how the thematic roles of each argument can enhance the meaning. From this study, it is found that the thematic roles in 74 sentences. Based on the findings, the thematic roles are found in these 10 posts are theme (30), associate (22), affecting (36), affected (105), actor (49), place (32), effect (27), and agent (260). The dominant thematic roles that frequently appeared is thematic role affected. The role of affected refers to what entities or who are affected or facing human rights issues. It concludes that thematic roles can enhance the meaning within the information on Instagram posts of United Nations Human Rights through the function of each thematic role relates to the real representation of who, what, and where the entity that has as well as facing problems with the issue of human rights in this world and the referent of their predicates.
