Abstract
Cross-gender communication refers to communication patterns that occur in two different genders, between men and women. Women are often associated with having more polite language, synonymous with gentleness and compassion. Men are identified as having language that is straightforward and straight to the point. This study examines the women’s language features used by Ariana Grande and the genderlect style that occurs in female interviewees and male interviewers in an interview titled "Ariana Grande 'Thank u, next' Interview" on YouTube Zach Sang Show. This study aims to find out the types of women’s language features used by Ariana Grande and their functions. This study also discusses the type of genderlect style that occurs in Ariana as a female interviewee and Zach as a male interviewer. This research examines women’s language features using Lakoff's (1975) theory and genderlect style on women’s language features using Tannen's (1990) theory. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. Words, phrases, and sentences from Ariana Grande's utterances are the main data sources of this research. Based on the analysis of the datums found, there are 43 datums that show 7 features of women’s language and 5 aspects of genderlect style that affect communication differences between men and women. Based on the type of features, Tag Question (9 datum), Superpolite Forms (8 datum), Lexical Hedges and Fillers (5 datum), Intensifiers (9 datum), Empty Adjective (6 datum), Rising Intonation on Declarative (3 datum) and Emphatic Stress (3 datum). Based on genderlect style, Conversation Goals, Directness vs. Indirectness, Cooperative vs. Competitive, Conflict Handling, and Emotional Control.
