Abstract

This research examined the social environments and their influences to the main character development in Descendants (2015). Social environment is one with interaction between individuals and other ones (Walgito, 2001). Meanwhile, character development is a character changes for nature, personality, way of thinking, and outlook on life throughout the story (Petrie and Boggs, 2008). In this context, one thing that can influence the main character developmnet is social environment. Therefore, this study was related to those topics. This research used a descriptive qualitative method and the main theory was from Hall (1996) to analyze the data. The findings showed there were two social environments (in the Isle of the Lost and Auradon) in the movie of Descendants. In the context of the characters, the people of the Isle of the Lost were described as villains because the Isle of the Lost was a place of confinement for villains, while the people of Auradon were described as noble and high-moral people. Furthermore, the two social environments in Descendants influenced the main character development for values and individual choices of Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos. However, their life in Auradon had caused them to experience character changes for the new things and for something never encountered before in the Isle of the Lost to realize goodness was stronger than evil, therefore, they exprecience a development from good character to bad character. In conclusion, there were two social environments in Descendants (2015) movie. In the Isle of the lost, this place was represented as evil and Auradon was represented as good. The main characters reflected that identity could change over time due to environmental changes and social interactions. The movie Descendants proved that identity could not grow alone, but it could also be influenced by intervention from people or the environment around them.
