Abstract
ENGLISH: The documentary film Pesta Oligarki by Watchdoc Documentary serves as a visual representation of oligarchic power practices in Indonesia, particularly in the context of the 2024 Presidential Election. The film adopts an investigative approach to reveal how a handful of elites dominate the democratic system. This research is motivated by the significance of investigative journalism in exposing hidden socio-political issues. This study aims to identify and analyze the denotative, connotative, and mythological messages of elite power conveyed in the documentary "Pesta Oligarki." By analyzing these three layers of meaning, this research seeks to reveal how visual media can represent power dominance and raise public awareness about political inequality. This research uses a qualitative approach with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method, which includes three levels of meaning: denotative, connotative, and myth. Data were collected through three techniques: observation by repeatedly watching the film, documentation in the form of screenshots and narrative transcripts, and literature study to support the theoretical and contextual framework of the research. The data sources consist of primary data taken directly from the documentary film "Pesta Oligarki," and secondary data from books, journals, articles, and previous relevant studies. The findings reveal that the film conveys denotative messages through direct depictions of political scenes such as presidential campaigns, agrarian conflicts, and public figure interviews. Connotative messages reflect structural injustice, weak democratic systems, and the portrayal of the public as passive objects. The film’s myths legitimize elite power through institutionalized discourse, such as “democracy festivity” and “national stability.” The film constructs an understanding that oligarchy is not merely a form of power but an ideological system perpetuated through politics, law, and media.
