Abstract

This research is motivated by the growing demand for students to access English-language academic literature, while their reading proficiency remains limited in comprehending academic texts comprehensively. This circumstance constitutes a pressing issue that must be addressed so that students—particularly those in the Arabic Language Education Department—can fully optimize their academic engagement. Accordingly, this research pursues two objectives: (1) To describe the target needs in English reading skills and materials for academic purposes required by students in the Arabic Language Education Department, (2) To identify the English reading learning needs for academic purposes of students in the Arabic Language Education Department. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design and descriptive technique. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews, supported by documentation to strengthen the validity of the findings. A total of 45 participants were involved. The instruments were designed to explore both target needs and learning needs of English reading skills and materials for academic purposes among Arabic Language Education students. The analysis of target needs indicates that students require advanced reading skills to comprehend English academic texts, including scientific journals, books, and other literature relevant to their discipline. The most demanding sub-reading skills involve skimming, scanning, and Intensive reading with summarizing and predicting strategies. The primary challenges identified are the lack of exposure to authentic reading materials and limited practice in applying effective reading strategies. Nevertheless, students demonstrate a strong motivation to strengthen their academic vocabulary and adopt more effective strategies. The analysis of learning needs reveals that students require reading skills and materials that are concise, clearly presented, and adjusted to their proficiency levels, while also enriched with academic vocabulary relevant to Islamic studies, Arabic language, and educational practices. These materials should be equipped with targeted exercises designed under the guidance of lecturers serving as facilitators, organizers, motivators, observers, and providers of academic information. Thus, students can be active in the learning process. In conclusion, students need broader exposure to academic literature, while lecturers must design appropriate instructional materials and pedagogical strategies. By doing so, the academic reading needs of Arabic Language Education students can be more effectively addressed, thereby supporting the achievement of their academic purposes
