Abstract

Romance as the popular work has the special rule called as formula. Formula of romance is the narrative conventions or plot in romance story which makes the story ideal or not. As the romance novel used in this research is The Notebook. The research questions are about the formula and the ideal formula of The Notebook. This Research aims to know the formula and the ideal formula of romance in The Notebook. The theories of this research are Cawelti’s formula of romance story to answer first question and Radway’s ideal formula (thirteen narrative functions) to answer the second question. The method of this research is qualitative method. Application of the method of qualitative research means the data generated in the form of words or sentences in the form of quotations. The results of this research are; the formula of romance in The Notebook is Pamela formula in which the heroine (Allie) overcomes the threat of meaningless passion in order to establish a complete love relationship. Meanwhile, there are available ten functions from thirteen as ideal formula of this novel; 1st function, story begins with the movement of the heroine; 2nd function, heroine suspected the hero is not interested in her; 3rd function, hero as the main character of men responded ambiguously; 4th function, the heroine interprets the hero’s sexual interest in her; 5th function is unavailable; 6th function is unavailable, 7th function, hero and heroine separated; 8th function, hero treats heroine in a loving; 9th function, heroine responds it warmly; 10th function, the heroine interprets the ambiguous act previously; 11th function is unavailable; 12th function, heroine responds sexually and emotionally, and; 13th function, identity of heroine returned. Based on the research to ideal formula of romance the conclusion is The Notebook can be categorized having ideal formula of romance. It is proved by the formula of The Notebook is Pamela formula and it has ten functions by thirteen Radway’s ideal narrative function.
