Abstract

This research is a research that uses descriptive comparative method with a qualitative approach that aims to explain the comparison of two film objects. The comparative method is used to compare two or more objects. Descriptive methods describe and interpret current events, conditions or situations. Qualitative research deals with the opinions, experiences and feelings of individuals that produce subjective data. Data taken from the film Jumanji (1995) and Zathura (2005) movies. The film discussed in this study is a film with a fantasy genre, in which there are several topics that will be discussed in order to be able to see the comparison of the two films. The researcher focuses this research on the fantasy genre formula using the theory of G. Sarricks. The formula in the fantasy genre is called Appeal Element, namely Pacing, Characterization, Storyline, and Frame Setting. The four topics are the main things that will be discussed by the researcher. To find the truth, researchers used comparative research with Research Questions; 1. What are the topics of fantasy genre’s formula in Jumanji (1995) and Zathura (2005) movies?. 2. How are these topics of fantasy genre’s formula applied in Jumanji (1995) and Zathura (2005) movies? The results of this study show that fantasy films in general, will have the same formula. These formulas then make fantasy movies into films that are in great demand by the audiences. The fantasy formula that can captivate the audience according to G.Sarricks is; 1. Pacing, 2. Characterization, 3. Storyline, 4. Frame Setting. These fantasy elements are found in both movie; Jumanji (1995) and Zathura (2005).
