Abstract
This work attempts to analyze the horror genre in the Netflix limited series titled The Haunting of Hill House. To analyze, the researcher uses the psychoanalysis approach with the theory of Abjection by Julia Kristeva. The theory discussing the elements of what makes things are considered scary and disgust, then reject (abject) by human instinct. The story of The Haunting of Hill House uses the evil mother character as an abject where she is depicted as one of the horrors experienced by her children. This Monstrous-Motherhood is a mother with the mental illness issue in the form of delusions and has an impact on the children's characteristics which make them have childhood trauma and character changes when they grow up into adults. By means, that these character developments can be identified through characterizations. In processing and analyzing data, the research uses the qualitative method. The method is used to obtain a detailed understanding, develop the theory and describe the findings of the data in narratives. In analysis, 75 pieces of data have been found which contains: the monstrous mother as the cause of the trauma and horror, three elements of horror in the film (the monstrous mother, the ghost, and the haunted house), and its effects to the children characters. All of the elements are the things that are assumed as the abject: things that are to be fear and disgust. Then to conclude the findings, the abject is truly the cause of the monstrous-motherhood character to appear and became the horror, and the development of the children characters from the beginning to the end of the story plot is caused by the three elements of horror.
