Abstract
Writing is considered as the most difficult skill to learn. There are many factors that affect its performance in English. One of which is the individual differences of a student, the nature of his talent, their ability to learn, motivation, and the personality type of a student. Knowing the personality type of a student can make it easier to develop and apply methods that are suitable for his personality type to see the performance and development of writing in English. From this background, the writer is willing to find out whether there is any correlation between students’ personality type and their writing performance. The purpose of this study are: (1) to find out the types of undergraduate students’ personality in English education department, (2) to find out the writing performance scores of undergraduate English education department students, and (3) to find out whether there is a significant correlation between students' personality types and their writing performance. This research uses correlation method. The populations are from the 4th semester students of PBI UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung and the number of research samples amounted to 32 people. The instrument used in this study was the MBTI personality type questionnaire which contained 70 items and the data analysis of writing documents in short story which scores obtained from the lecturer in the creative writing course. The results of the study showed that there were 12 out of 16 various personality types of MBTI students of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung in English education. The writing performance scores in 32 samples indicates that there are 6% of students categorized as very good, 59% of students was categorized as good, 22% of students was categorized as Fair, and 13% of students was categorized as poor. The outcome for correlation between students’ personality type and their writing performance reveals that the significance (sign. 2 tailed) is -0,363. The researcher then compared rcount with rtable. The number of subjects is 32, so the rtable is 32 (0,349). Based on the results of correlation data processing, there is a negative correlation to students' personality and writing performance. It is because the correlation calculation results negative. The four MBTI references are how they get their energy in writing, how they process information from their five senses or intuition, how they make decisions through their thoughts or feelings, and how they make them see the world whether being fully prepared or letting things flow are not the influence their writing performance. It is the determination, language skill, and practice that affect the performance of writing.
