Abstract

This research analyze the language features used by the male and female judges in Masterchef Australia 2021. The topic is chosen because men and women show different language characteristics in their utterances. Therefore, this research aimed to finds the kinds of language features used by male and female judges in Masterchef Australia 2021 and their intentions in using the feature. In this research, descriptive qualitative approach was used in conducting the research. Then, the data which taken from videos were analyzed by identifying and classifying using the language features theory proposed by Coates (2013). From this research, it is found that the judges of Masterchef Australia 2021 used all of the seven language features. In the male judges’ utterances, the total amount of language features used is 279. Those are 42 hedges, 17 minimal responses, 2 tag questions, 69 questions, 42 commands and directives, 5 swearing and taboo language, and 104 compliments. While in the female judge’s utterances, the total amount of language features used is 178. Those are 41 hedges, 15 minimal responses, 1 tag question, 36 questions, 26 commands and directives, 1 swearing and taboo language, and 58 compliments. Then, the intentions of the judges in using those features are Hedges to mitigate an utterance, to decrease the possibility of the unfriendliness, to show an uncertain thing, and to indicate confidence; Minimal response to show that a messages have been received; Tag question to decrease strong assertion and show less confidence about a truth; Question to get information and attention; Command and direct to get someone to do something; Swear and taboo to express feeling; and Compliment to express amazement.
