Abstract

The research aims to (1) find out the kind of cognitive skill presented in the 10th grade English Textbook used by the Indonesian students; and (2) to identify how the 10th grade English Textbook in reading exercises fulfils students' cognitive needs in Karya Budi Senior High School. This research used a qualitative approach where data was collected through document analysis, observation, and interviews. The document that was analyzed is the 10th grade English Textbook published by the Indonesia Education Ministry. The participants involved in the classroom for observation were tenth-grade students of Karya Budi Senior High School Cileunyi the in Academic Year 2022/2023. The research chose X MIPA 1, as the participant, consisting of 36 students. The instrument of this study is four aspects of reading comprehension to checklist when students do the reading activities from the 10th grade English Textbook. The interview was conducted with one English teacher from Karya Budi Senior High School Cileunyi, to learn the impact of the use of the 10th grade English textbook on students’ reading comprehension. The findings showed there are just three cognitive skills appeared in the English Textbook that entitled Bahasa Inggris. They are, Analysis, Consciousness, and Interpretation. The data investigated 10th grade English textbook in reading exercises fulfil the needs of students' cognitive skills in Karya Budi Senior High School. The data presented there are 12 students from 36 in total that fulfilled the four aspects of reading comprehension. Furthermore, it is reflected in the result of the teachers’ interviews that students still struggle to finish the exercise for one unit. It reflected that the 10th grade English Textbook can fulfil students; cognitive skills. The implication of this research is that the 10th grade English textbook may to fulfil students’ cognitive skills, but that is not maximal.
