Abstract
One of the communication kinds of genre that is commonly used by teenager or young people is slang. The spreading of slang words are very fast, and one of the factors is from a movie. This study concerns on the analysis of slang words in If I Stay movie script. There are two research question about the types of slang word formation, and the function of slang used in If I Stay movie script.This research uses the theory of Yule (2010) and Mattiello (2008) to analyze the types of slang word formation process and the thoery from Mattiello (2005) to answer the research question about function of slang.The research uses descriptive qualitative method. The researcher takes the primary data from If I Stay movie script, and secondary from the If I Stay movie itself. In technique of collecting data the researcher uses the documentary technique.This research found five types of word formation from fourty three data,there are coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending, and clipping. Besides, it found four slang function of slang from thirty five data in the If I Stay movie script as secrecy, intimacy, jocularity, and offensiveness.From the result of the research it can be concluded that slang is nonstandard use of words in a language of a part social group. Mostly the types of slang word formation in If I Stay movie script was compounding and the slang in the movie mostly has function as intimacy
