Abstract

Film is a form of literary work enjoyed by many people. The interesting storyline combined with fluid cinematography makes people enjoy watching films. However, many people miss important points in films such as the presence of symbols and allegories in the movie Hacksaw Ridge (2016). Therefore, research on this topic is necessary with the following research questions: (1) What are the symbolism and allegory representations that are prevalent throughout the movie Hacksaw Ridge? (2) How do symbolism and allegory contribute to the overall thematic resonance of the movie Hacksaw Ridge? This research uses a qualitative analysis method, and the data are analyzed using the theory of symbolism and allegory by Dennis W. Petrie and Joseph M. Boggs regarding the process of creating symbols and allegories in films, with Hacksaw Ridge as the main reference. From data analysis, the findings show that the representations of symbols and allegories in Hacksaw Ridge support the theme and storyline concerning the main character, Desmond Doss, who has a strong conviction in avoiding violent acts such as killing. The research results indicate that the symbols and allegories found, such as Hacksaw Ridge and the Holy Bible, have profound and memorable meanings and provide significant emotional and intellectual impact on the audience. It can be concluded that the role of symbols and allegories in films is one of the important points that contribute to the meaningfulness of the film.
