Abstract
The study of “Irony Leading to Parody on Main Characters in Postmodernism Fiction Novel They Both Die at the End” explores the role of irony in the novel They Both Die at the End and its contribution to parody within the context of postmodernism. Irony is a literary tool that often appears in various forms, such as verbal, situational, and dramatic, and plays a crucial role in creating parody. Parody, using irony, blends humour with sharp criticism of literary conventions or social norms. Thus, this research is aimed to describe the types of irony leading to parody and its contribution to parody in the novel. The theoretical framework for this study included Lyotard's (1984) theory of postmodernism, Landy's (1972) theory of irony, and Bakhtin's (1981) theory of parody. This framework helped identify and connect elements of postmodernism, irony, and parody in the novel. The research employed structural analysis and postmodernism analysis methods. Structural analysis identified narrative elements, while postmodernism analysis examined how postmodern elements, particularly irony, contributed to parody. The findings showed that the types of irony found in the novel were: 1) verbal irony (17 data), 2) situational irony (13 data), and 3) dramatic irony (10 data). Among the types of irony analyzed, verbal irony appeared most often, with 17 examples identified. Meanwhile, the contribution of irony to parody in this novel was how Silvera used irony to critique social norms and add emotional depth to the story. Based on the findings, the irony in this novel enriched the characters and plot, played a crucial role in creating a parody that challenged and entertained readers while prompting reflection on philosophical questions about life and death.
