Abstract

This research discusses the posters published by the Instagram account @flyers_for_falastin, which are used as a symbolic resistance tool to raise awareness about the genocide taking place in Palestine. This research uses Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, which includes the concepts of denotation, connotation, and myth, and is combined with Pierre Bourdieu's symbolic resistance theory. The research aims to analyse the signs contained in the posters, as well as the denotative, connotative and mythical meanings associated with the wider cultural and social context. This research uses qualitative methods to produce descriptive explanations. There are 25 data examined in this study taken from the time period of October 2023 to July 2024. The results showed that the posters not only conveyed messages directly but also implicitly through the use of cultural, historical, and human rights symbols. The mythology that emerges from this analysis reveals how symbolic resistance is expressed through these elements, and how the posters serve as a means to mobilise support and raise social awareness of the issues faced by Palestinian society. This research is expected to provide motivation, insight and reference for future readers and researchers, who are researching the same study on posters or semiotics.
