Abstract
Figurative language in poetry usually uses language that is not commonly used in everyday life, making it difficult to interpret an implied message. However, in the poetry book Najwa Zebian’s The Book of Healing uses simple figurative language so that it is easy to describe an implied message. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to identify the kinds of figurative language used and the meaning in The Book of Healing and to analyze the function of figurative language in conveying themes of emotional experience and personal growth in The Book of Healing. The method used in this research is qualitative with descriptive. This research uses the theories of Annas & Rosen, Johnson & Arp, Keraf, and Rozakis to identify the kinds of figurative language. Then, this research uses the theories of Perrine, Culler, and Frey to analyze the function of figurative language. The researcher took 46 out of 90 poems based on the book of Najwa Zebian’s The Book of Healing. There are 42 metaphors, 37 images, 10 personifications, 7 hyperboles, 5 similes, 1 oxymoron, and 1 paradox. Metaphor is the most common type of figurative language found in this study, while oxymoron and paradox only appear once. The function of figurative language is to strengthen emotion, imagination, make the text more interesting and lively, communicate ideas indirectly, clarify intentions, and create unique language. Then, The Book of Healing is a tragedy genre.
