Abstract

This study is focus on finding how the nature of courage is displayed as well as the search for icons, indexes, and symbols that contain the nature of courage in the film Mulan (2020). The theory that used is related to the signs of objects that represent something. Researchers use the characterization theory of James H. Pickering and Jeffrey D. Hoeper which is associated with the nature of courage in the Merriam Webster Dictionary. Also the theory of icons, indexes, and symbols from Charles Sanders Pierce. The researcher chose to research courage because based on the synopsis of Mulan, an action genre film, there will definitely be many points about how courage is displayed directly or indirectly. Referring to this, one of the visual communication media, namely film, is one of the media that contains objects. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive. This method relies on text and image data through dialogue and scene from Mulan film. The final result of this research are include to the dialogue and scene that contain icon, index, and symbol of courage from several character. After conducting research, the researcher found that courage is not only possessed by the main character, but almost all the characters involved have courage points. And so it can be understood how courage in the Mulan film is displayed and how the icons, indexes, and symbols that contain courage are in the film.
