Abstract

This study explores the use of the Learn English Podcast (LEP) to determine its effectiveness in improving listening comprehension among senior high school students in Sukabumi. The primary objective is to examine whether there is a significant improvement in students’ listening skills after being taught using LEP. The research addresses three key questions: (1) students’ listening comprehension before using LEP, (2) students’ listening comprehension after using LEP, and (3) the significance of the difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. This research employed a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design using a quantitative approach. A total of 34 eleventh-grade students from SMAN 1 Cicurug, Sukabumi, were selected as participants through convenience sampling. The data were collected using 18-item multiple-choice listening comprehension tests administered before and after the treatment. The descriptive statistics show an increase in students’ listening comprehension scores. The mean score improved from 62.65 in the pre-test to 76.56 in the post-test. The minimum score increased from 33 to 55, and the maximum score rose from 89 to 94. The standard deviation decreased from 12.098 to 9.554, indicating more consistent performance among students. Moreover, the paired sample t-test analysis revealed a t-count value of -10.016 with a significance level of 0.000, which is lower than 0.05. This indicates a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. The N-Gain score was 0.37, indicating a moderate improvement category. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) is accepted. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that the use of the Learn English Podcast (LEP) significantly enhances students’ listening comprehension, suggesting that integrating educational podcasts into English language learning can be an effective strategy for improving listening skills in an EFL classroom.
