Abstract
Language plays an important role in conveying ideas, emotions, and experiences through song lyrics. This study aims to analyze the denotative and connotative meanings and identify the emotional representations found in the lyrics of Coldplay's Parachutes album. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method using a semantic approach based on George Yule's (2006) theory of denotative and connotative meaning and Geoffrey Leech's (1981) theory of affective meaning. The findings revealed 41 denotative meanings, 41 connotative meanings, and four categories of emotional representation: Melancholic Discourse 27, Representation of Love 9 , Romantic Idealization 5, and Emotional Intoxication 2, with Melancholic Discourse as the dominant category. In conclusion, the study shows that the integration of denotative and connotative meanings provides a deeper understanding of the emotional messages conveyed in the lyrics of Coldplay's Parachutes album
