Abstract

Transformation is a change from one art to another, included in comparative literary studies called ecranization that becomes one of the most influential parts of literary works. Many popular movies are the result of ecranization. Therefore, it is interesting and necessary to conduct a research about this topic with research questions: (1) How is the transformation of the intrinsic elements in the novel of Anne of green gables into the movie of Anne of green gables? (2) What makes the transformation of the intrinsic elements in the novel of Anne of green gables into the movie of Anne of green gables? This study used a descriptive qualitative method and the theories were from Eneste (1991) about the process of ecranization, especially from novel to movie, and from Hutcheon (2012) about the process of adaptation in literary works. The findings from the data analysis showed that the intrinsic elements transformed were the plot reduction (7 data), addition to the plot (2 data), the characterization reduction (5 data), addition to the character (1 data), reduction to setting (3 data), addition to the setting (0 data), variation to the plot (2 data), variation to the setting (1 data), variation to the character (1 data). Meanwhile, the things that caused the transformation in the intrinsic element were differences in interpretation, unimportant characters, the differences in visualization, and the limited time. From the data analysis, it can be concluded that the transformation of the intrinsic elements in the novel to the movie Anne of Green Gables used a literary ecranization process, namely addition, reduction, and variation.
